I came across these two blogs, which describe Vedanta in a language that can be understood by a layman: http://mystudyofvedanta.blogspot.in/ and http://introductiontovedanta.blogspot.in/

The blogger calls himself/herself as a student of Vedanta. The blog contents are said to be based on the lectures of Sw. Paramarthananda of Chennai. Vedanta is introduced there within the framework of the traditional text known as Tattvabodha.

www.thehindu.com: new-experiment-to-test-the-nature-of-universe

The above small article-cum-news item appeared in "The Hindu" of 31 August 2014. It talks about an experiment which may prove that we live in a 2-dimensional [2-d] hologram. It also says that the same experiment may prove the uncertainty in space-time. (Is it not that the  space-time and energy-momentum (and as such all physical parameters) are bound by uncertainty principle already known and verified in science? .. and what is the Holometer and what data will it gather?).

Be that as it may, the motivation for this experiment must come from Holographic Conjecture [HC]. What this conjecture is?

Stephen Hawking predicted that the surface area of event horizon surrounding the Black Hole should measure its entropy. This led scientists to advocate that the maximum entropy of any closed region of space can never exceed a quarter of the area of the circumscribing surface based on Bekenstein-Hawking law of entropy. Since entropy (Information Theory) relates to the total information contained in a system, this suggests that the information associated with all phenomena in the 3-dimensional [3-d] world can be contained in its 2-d boundary, like a holographic image observed by us in contemporary holograms.

The said new experiment mentioned in The Hindu is being discussed in few Advaita blogs. Does it have any connection with Advaita?
As we know, a hologram encodes a three-dimensional [3-d] image on a 2-d surface. This image is perceived to be out in space, in front of its 2-d surface provided that it is viewed from an appropriate (frontal) position and it is illuminated by an appropriate (frontal) source of light. Viewed from any other perspective the only information one can detect about the object is in the complex interference patterns encoded on the holographic plate. In analogous fashion the information in Intelligent Being's neural hologram is displayed as a visual, 3-d object out in space only when it is viewed from the appropriate first-person perspective of the perceiving subject. This happens only when the necessary and sufficient conditions for consciousness are satisfied (similar to ‘illumination by an appropriate source of light’). Viewed from any other third-person perspective the information in the BMI's hologram appears to be nothing more than neural correlates in the brain (similar to interference patterns on the plate).

This analogy can be extended to the 4-d universe of Einstein-Minkowski space-time, and also to n-dimensional models of modern physics. In the generalized Holographic Conjecture [gHC], the states of a Quantum Field Theory [QFT] defined over a space-time manifold of (n+1) dimensions are projected (one-to-one mapped) onto the states of another QFT defined over space-time manifold of 'n' dimensions. In hologram, the 2-d projection of a 3-d object, when properly illumined by light, is accessible again in 3-d space. Similarly the 3-d projection of a 4-d world-reality is accessible in 4-d space-time to an Intelligent Being [IB] which has access to fourth dimension of time in the light of supra-dimensional Brahman. IB's body is in the 3-d space while what we call as mind is the fourth dimensional, time-like aspect of the individual IB, which becomes sentient only when IB's mind 'reflects' (the light of) Brahman.

If (n+1) dimensional manifold has n-dimensional surface which can contain all the information of (n+1) manifold, what is the surface of 1-d curve? It is the mysterious 0-dimensional [0-d] surface. It is a point without dimensions or an all pervasive infinity that pervades all the dimensions. It is mysterious because it can contain all the world information within! In a sense it is zero as well as infinity.

In Advaita literature, the metaphor of “World being painted and illumined on a canvas or wall (fresco)” is often used. Its first reference in the extant texts comes in Shankara's Upadesha. 15.2; then prominently in Vimuktatman's Ishta-Siddhi 1.1, and Vidyaranya's Panchadashi (Ch-6: Chitra-Diipa). There Consciousness is analogous to 2-d fresco on which the world phenomena are painted or superimposed (in Advaitic terminology it is an "adhyAsa").

However, Brahman as the pure, undifferentiated Consciousness is the ultimate boundary (0-d substratum cum canvas) that not only pervades and supports all other dimensions, but also provides the metaphoric light in which the world-phenomena are illumined!

NB: No analogy should be stretched beyond a point.

2014 elections: AAP performance

(Edited Post of VJTI1977 blog 16 May 2014)

I was not surprised by AAP results, because none of the pre-poll surveys and exit polls that I knew were giving them double digit seats. I never believed that they will win any sizeable number of seats. Their job was to undercut Congress votes; and in my understanding, at some places, they did it splendidly.

We must remember, Jana Sangh formed in mid 50s and its avatar BJP
took almost 60 years to reach this stage. AAP will have to build up their organization painstakingly, persist with their efforts tenaciously, and replace the feudal and corrupt ways of Congress. They are nice people and deserve a chance, if not immediately at least in future. Their anti-corruption crusade and opposition to VIP culture is quite necessary today.

Spying and Arthashastra

(My post on VJTI1977 group (16 May 2014) as a time-pass till the election results poured in).

Spying has been practised by states since ancient times. Kautilya's Arthashastra (KAS: circa 350BC edited till 400CE) devotes two separate Chapters - chapter 11 and 12 - for spying and its institutions. This more than 2000 years old voluminous Sanskrit treatise
of "political management" (15 books, 150 chapters, and 6000 shlokas) is quite amoral in the deployment of spies even within its own state.
As a sample:

Book-I, Chapter12: < A poor but clever Brahmin widow can make her earning through spying by being part of "King's harem". She shall frequently visit King's senior ministers (for spying and extracting information) >. The amoral nature of KAS in general and spying in particular is quite obvious here.

Spies can be deployed within state to guard against mutiny and externally to guard against aggression. However, KAS differentiates between friends and foes. In its concentric circle theory friends and foes alternate in concentric circles by following the maxim - your enemy's enemy is your friend. This conceptual arrangement breaks when Kingdoms (Janapadas) want to grow into bigger Kingdoms (Mahajanapadas) or into imperial Kingdoms (Samrajyas) by aggression. In the medieval past, the ambitious kingdoms used to grow by defeating neighbours (natural foes) and making them part of their own kingdom. An imperial state as such could deploy as many spies as it can blurring the boundaries between friends and foes in the process of growth. It follows the age old dictum "might is right"

KAS has been an extremely influential ancient treatise. Its political management is quite detailed and had served as a model for many medieval monarchies.

However we have to remember two things:

(a) KAS differentiates between friends and enemies when the kingdom is stabilized even though its spying institution is basically amoral in nature.

(b) KAS is applicable to monarchies - to monarch (king) and his feudal network. Strictly speaking it is not applicable to modern liberal democracies.

The very fact that even today most of the countries have their own spying agencies and some countries spy on frinds as well as foes has its own story to tell.

Motion Mountain (MM):

This physics book (uplinked in the blog in 6-volumes) is remarkable for its case studies and applications though it puts forth some speculative theories. I am not sure if Volume-6 (Strand Model) can be treated as physics considering its speculative nature. MM's extremal models of GR and Quantum Theory where minimum action and maximum force forms the axiomatic basis need to be vetted by the main stream physicists though the author himself has a PhD in physics. On the whole this 6-volume book is quite interesting - the name "Advanture of Physics" is quite appropriate.
Vasudeva Manana:

I uplinked "vAsudeva manana" (Marathi) written by Tembe Swami. When I read it few months back I was struck by the brevity as well clarity of this small booklet. This prAkRRita-vedAntasAra is as good as (in fact may be even better than if not more exhaustive than) the original Sanskrit Vedantasara of Sadananda Yogindra (15thC).
What The Buddha Thought:

Skimmed through Richard Gombrich's "What the Buddha Thought" (2009) this week. I noticed that he had zeroed on the process-centric nature of Buddha's philosophy in the very first chapter by declaring that according to Buddha "Everything is Process" (page 10). I remembered, I had noticed that way back in 2002 when I came across then recently published Delanda's "Intensive Science and Virtual Philosophy". I had mentioned the same in my 2004 article "Ontology of Process" that was put sometime on 2008-2009 on scribed.

Gombrich provides the genesis of Bauddha karma theory and its comparison with Vedic and Jain Karma model quite well.

AAP can emerge as a credible alternative to broad left front (Marxists, their allies, JD(U), and SP put together) because of its left-of-center "aam adami" profile.
Emphasis on R&D by way reinvestment of profits, better fiscal allocation in infrastructure, decentralization to reduce the load on few urban centers, better incentives to manufacturing sector, restoring the balance between the growth of software vis-a-vis hardware industries; reduce the size of gray market in hard ware (particularly semiconductor and IC components), reduce the election expenses, introduce moral education in the school curricula, proper auditing of educational institutions and religious trusts etc. could be some additional specifics. Tackling corruption will be the general agenda.
